The Incident Language Precision That Helps

Vague language during incidents wastes minutes. The precision that helps.

Be specific

Specificity in incident updates is the daily discipline that separates calm responders from panicked ones. Concrete numbers and named endpoints beat vague claims every time. “Latency on /search elevated 5x” gives the team something to verify; “system slow” gives them anxiety.

Avoid

Hedge words read as uncertainty in incident channels. Either confirm the claim or label it explicitly as a hypothesis. The reader cannot tell the difference if the writer does not.

Builds trust

Precise communicators inspire confidence in stakeholders during the incident and afterwards. The skill is learnable through deliberate practice; game-days are the right place to build it.
