Specificity in incident updates is the daily discipline that separates calm responders from panicked ones. Concrete numbers and named endpoints beat vague claims every time. “Latency on /search elevated 5x” gives the team something to verify; “system slow” gives them anxiety.

- Timestamp anchor. “As of 14:32” reference. Catches stale claims as the incident evolves.
- Named scope. “EU region only” or “checkout flow” qualifier. Prevents over-broad claims that escalate unnecessarily.
Avoid
Hedge words read as uncertainty in incident channels. Either confirm the claim or label it explicitly as a hypothesis. The reader cannot tell the difference if the writer does not.
