First Knative Setup
Serverless K8s.
Overview
The first Knative setup gives Kubernetes workloads serverless characteristics: scale-to-zero, request-based scaling, and traffic management. Knative Serving and Eventing add these capabilities to existing K8s clusters; the install matches workload to serverless without rebuilding the platform.
- Serverless K8s. Workloads scale to zero between requests; supports cost efficiency for bursty traffic.
- Request-based scaling. Concurrency-driven, not just CPU; matches actual demand more closely than CPU-based autoscaling.
- Traffic splitting. Built-in canary support; matches progressive delivery without external tools.
- Eventing plus multi-tenancy. Cloud Events ingress and routing supports event-driven systems; per-namespace isolation supports many teams.
The approach
The practical approach: install Knative Serving first, define Services declaratively, set per-Service concurrency, monitor cold starts, document per-Service configuration. The team’s discipline produces predictable Knative deployments.
- Knative Serving install. Helm or operator install; the canonical entry point.
- Knative Service. CRD that defines a serverless workload; produces declarative configuration.
- Concurrency setting. Per-Service concurrency target; matches load shape rather than blanket CPU.
- Monitor cold starts plus documented workload. First-request latency matters; per-Service configuration committed for operational reviews.
Why this compounds
Knative discipline compounds across services. Each serverless workload inherits the patterns; the team’s serverless expertise grows; new workloads adopt scale-to-zero by default rather than over-provisioning.
- Better cost efficiency. Scale-to-zero on idle; produces real savings on bursty workloads.
- Better scaling fit. Match scaling to actual concurrency; produces predictable behaviour under load.
- Reusable patterns. Standard Service templates capture conventions; scales operations.
- Institutional knowledge. Each Service teaches Knative patterns; the team’s serverless muscle grows.
The first Knative setup is an infrastructure investment that pays off across years. Nova AI Ops integrates with serverless telemetry, surfaces patterns, and supports the team’s serverless discipline.
