AWS Cost Explorer Power Use
Beyond defaults: aggregations, forecasts.
Overview
AWS Cost Explorer ships with default views that show top-line spend. The real value sits beyond the defaults: per-tag aggregation that ties cost to teams, forecasting that supports next quarter’s budget, and per-resource-group analysis that turns “EC2 is expensive” into “this service in this account is expensive.” Power use is what converts the tool from a billing dashboard into a FinOps surface.
- Beyond default views. Aggregations and forecasts that the default UI hides. The discipline starts where the defaults end.
- Per-tag aggregation. Cost-allocation tags broken out by team or service. Accountability becomes possible.
- Cost forecasting. Per-account or per-tag forecast at the 12-month horizon. Supports next-quarter planning.
- Per-resource-group analysis plus quarterly review. Resource-group views surface specific drivers; quarterly review catches drift before it becomes structural.
The approach
Three habits make Cost Explorer a real FinOps tool: per-tag aggregation tied to team ownership, forecasting on the spend lines that matter, and a documented set of saved views the team uses on a recurring cadence.
- Per-tag aggregation. Cost-allocation tags configured at the org level. Per-team the spend visible in one view.
- Cost forecasting. Forecast charts on the lines that matter. Surprises shrink quarter over quarter.
- Per-resource-group analysis. Resource groups tied to services. Spend drivers surface at the right granularity.
- Quarterly review plus documented views. Per-team the saved views; quarterly cadence catches drift while it is still small.
Why this compounds
Each saved view is reused every month. The team’s FinOps mental model deepens; new teams inherit the views instead of inventing them; cost conversations become data-driven instead of vibes-based.
- Cost visibility improves continuously. Right views surface spend drivers in real time, not at month-end.
- Team accountability becomes routine. Per-tag attribution makes spend ownership visible across the org.
- Operational fit improves. Right aggregation matches the way the team actually thinks about workloads.
- Year-one investment, year-two habit. First view is heavy lift. By the third, building a new saved view is a five-minute task.
