How to Run an Incident War Room

4 min read Incident Management

When an incident is live, the war room is the single place your team coordinates. It pins the metrics, logs, and deploys from the moment things broke, gives everyone a shared chat, and puts the Copilot and your runbooks one click away.

Steps

1

Launch the war room

From Active Incidents, open the incident and launch its war room. Everyone you page lands in the same view.

2

Work from the frozen timeline

The war room pins metrics, logs, and recent deploys at the incident time, so the picture does not shift under you while you investigate.

3

Coordinate with responders

Chat in-thread, tag the on-call, and keep a running record. Everything here becomes part of the postmortem.

4

Ask the Copilot

Use the Copilot inside the war room to query telemetry and get a suspected cause without leaving the incident.

5

Pick and run a runbook

Open the runbook picker, choose the matching playbook, fill in the variables, and execute. High-risk steps route through approvals.

6

Resolve and capture the postmortem

Mark the incident resolved and Nova drafts the postmortem from everything that happened in the room.

Tip:

You do not have to take notes. The war room captures the timeline, chat, and actions automatically, so the postmortem mostly writes itself.

Set up incidents and on-call, then run your first war room.
