Reliability Engineering

Are we getting better month over month,
one page that answers it with numbers

Trends is the long-horizon view across the metrics that leadership cares about. Incident count, MTTR, SLO compliance, AI cost, on-call load, deploy frequency. Sliced by month, by team, by service. Use it for monthly business reviews, quarterly board reports, and "is the platform investment paying off?" conversations.

Six Tracked Metrics

The numbers leadership reads

Six metrics get long-horizon trending: incident count, MTTR, SLO compliance, AI cost, on-call load (pages per engineer per week), and deploy frequency. The list is curated; not every internal metric belongs on a trend page. Each metric has a target trajectory drawn alongside the actual.

  • Incident count: monthly count, severity-weighted; trend should be down
  • MTTR: mean time to resolve; trend should be down
  • SLO compliance: percent of SLOs in compliance; trend should be up
  • AI cost: monthly LLM spend; trend should track usage, not balloon
  • On-call load + deploy frequency: engineer fatigue + delivery velocity; both informative

Slice By

Per-team and per-service

Each metric can be sliced by team or by service. The slice view shows you which teams are improving and which are not, and which services are dragging the metric. Useful for quarterly reviews where the question is "where do we focus next quarter?"

  • By team: every team's contribution to each metric; ranks teams without inviting blame
  • By service: which services drive incident count, MTTR, cost, informative, not punitive
  • Drill into any cell: click any team-month or service-month for the underlying incidents

Annotations

Mark the moments that mattered

Annotate the trend chart with significant events: platform launches, major incidents, team reorgs, runbook deployments. The annotations show up as vertical lines on the chart so the trend reader sees the why behind the shape. Annotations are tenant-scoped and visible only to the team.

  • Vertical-line annotations: mark dates with one-line descriptions; visible across all metrics
  • Per-team scope: team-private annotations stay within the team; org-wide annotations are explicit
  • Captured for QBR: annotations export with the chart so the QBR slide tells the story

A signed PDF leadership can ship

One-click PDF export of the current trend selection. The PDF is signed with the platform key and dated. Use it directly in the board or QBR deck. Snapshots are immutable: a "Q1 trend snapshot" stays the same even after Q1 numbers shift due to late-arriving data.

  • Signed PDF: platform-signed; recipients can verify the document was not edited
  • Immutable snapshots: every export is frozen at the moment; later data corrections do not retroactively change it
  • Embed-friendly: PDF render also works as an inline iframe in Notion and Confluence
