SLO Dashboards Stakeholders Actually Read
Most SLO dashboards are built for the team that owns them. They look right, get bookmarked, and then never get opened by anyone else. Here is what to change so the rest of the org reads them.
Audience first
An SLO dashboard the engineering team checks daily and a dashboard a product manager opens once a week are not the same artifact. The first wants every datapoint. The second wants a verdict. Pick the audience before you pick the charts.
The mistake is trying to serve both audiences with one dashboard. The result satisfies neither: too dense for the PM, too vague for engineering. The fix is two dashboards (or two views of the same data, with the stakeholder view above the fold). Pick the audience for each view explicitly.
The audience question also drives time horizon. Engineers want last-24-hours and last-7-days. Stakeholders want 30-day rolling and quarterly trend. Showing engineers a quarterly chart hides today's problem; showing stakeholders a 24-hour chart hides the trend. Different time horizons per audience.
The four tiles
Most stakeholder dashboards converge on the same four tiles, top to bottom: budget remaining, burn rate now, 30-day trend, and a row-per-incident table. Anything else is for the engineering view.
The order matters. Budget remaining first because it's the answer to the implicit question ("are we OK?"). Burn rate second because it tells the reader whether the answer is improving or worsening. 30-day trend third because it provides context. Incidents table last because it's the supporting evidence.
Why exactly four. Three is incomplete (missing one of: status, trajectory, history, evidence). Five or more is too dense for a one-glance read. Four fits comfortably above the fold on a 1080p monitor and answers all four implicit questions in 5 seconds of attention.
Budget remaining
Big number. Percentage and minutes. Green if above 30%, yellow 10-30%, red below. No graph, no breakdown. The first thing a leader needs to know is whether they should care about the rest of the dashboard at all.
The colour coding is doing real work. A leader scanning the dashboard at 8am can read the green tile in 200ms and move on with their day. A red tile demands attention; a yellow tile prompts a question. The colour gradient turns the dashboard into a passive monitor — the leader doesn't need to interpret the number, the number announces itself.
The thresholds (30%, 10%) come from the error-budget-policy literature. 30% is "comfortable margin" — the team can deploy normally. 10-30% is "be careful" — non-critical changes pause. Below 10% is "halt feature work" — the team focuses on reliability. Tying the thresholds to the policy makes the colour mean something.
Burn rate now
How fast we are spending the budget right now compared to the steady-state pace. A multiplier, not a percentage. 0.4x means we are doing better than the SLO requires. 3x means at this rate we will exhaust the budget early.
The multiplier framing is more intuitive than the percentage. "We're at 73% budget remaining" is a static fact; "we're burning at 3x" tells the reader something is actively going wrong. Combined, they answer the two-part question: where are we, and where are we going.
Burn rate also has a colour gradient: under 1.0 is green (you have buffer), 1.0-2.0 is yellow (slight overspend), above 2.0 is red (sustained overspend). Most teams find their burn rate sits at 0.3-0.6 most of the time and spikes during incidents. The dashboard catches the spike instantly.
30-day trend
One line, no thresholds. The reader wants to see the slope. Is the budget burning down faster this month than last? Stack two months on top of each other if you can.
The single-line discipline is important. Engineers want to add: SLO target, secondary metric, deploy markers, incident annotations. Each addition reduces the chart's communicative power. The stakeholder reading the chart for 5 seconds processes one line easily; two lines double the cognitive load; four lines turn it into noise.
The two-month overlay (this month + last month, same axis) is high-leverage. It shows the reader whether trajectory is improving or degrading without any words. The overlay turns "trend" from a static line into a comparison.
Incidents, one per row
Every incident that consumed more than 5% of the budget gets its own row: date, duration, percent burnt, link to the postmortem. This row turns "we had a bad month" into "we had two bad incidents and the rest was fine." That distinction changes the conversation.
The 5%-budget threshold matters. Lower (1%) and the table fills with noise; higher (10%) and significant incidents get hidden. 5% catches the incidents that mattered without including transient flaps that happened to register on the SLO.
The postmortem link is critical. A stakeholder seeing "incident on 2026-04-15, 18% budget burn" wants to know what happened and what the team is doing about it. A click-through to the postmortem answers both questions. Without the link, the table is just bookkeeping.
What to leave out
Latency percentiles. Per-endpoint breakdowns. The full burn-rate curve. Any chart with more than two lines. None of these belong on the stakeholder dashboard. They belong on the engineering view, one click away.
The discipline of leaving things out is what makes stakeholder dashboards valuable. Engineers see the dashboard and want to add their pet metric ("but my service's queue depth is interesting!"). Each addition raises the cognitive load and lowers the attention budget for the four core tiles. Resist additions; create separate engineering dashboards for the breakdown.
The "one click away" principle. The stakeholder dashboard has no detail; the engineering dashboard has all the detail. A clear "engineer view" link at the top of the stakeholder dashboard takes any reader who wants more depth to the right place. Both audiences served, neither compromised.
Common antipatterns
The "make it look professional" trap. Stakeholders requested "a more polished dashboard," team adds 12 new charts and a sidebar of context. The stakeholder now spends 5 minutes parsing the dashboard before getting to the answer. Less is more.
The deprecated dashboard that nobody removes. Original SLO dashboard from 2024 still in the team's wiki, alongside the new one. Stakeholders bookmark the old one because that's the link they have. Maintain ONE stakeholder dashboard per service; delete the old.
The dashboard with no owner. Lives in someone's old wiki, gets out of date, nobody fixes the broken charts. Every stakeholder dashboard needs a named owner whose job description includes "this dashboard is current and accurate."
The "we'll review weekly" promise that doesn't happen. Without a recurring meeting, dashboards drift. The weekly business review is what makes stakeholder dashboards real; without it, they atrophy.
What to do this week
Three moves. (1) Audit your current SLO dashboard against the four-tile pattern. Most teams find they have 8-12 tiles; identify which 4 belong on the stakeholder view and move the rest to a separate engineering view. (2) Add the budget-remaining tile if you don't have one — it's the single highest-impact addition. (3) Send the dashboard link to your VP of engineering and your head of product. If they don't open it within a week, the dashboard isn't visible enough — change the URL, pin it in their team channels, or attach to weekly status emails.
